We just got back from our Disneyland trip, and I had one of the most positive experiences at Donald’s Tales of Adventure Character Dinner at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel. From the incredible chef support to the abundance of gluten-free options and character interactions—it truly exceeded expectations.

Gluten-Free Experience
I booked the first reservation of the dinner service (4:00 PM), mainly because it was our arrival day and I knew we’d be hungry. It ended up being a fantastic decision.
We checked in via the Disneyland app at 3:45 PM, and shortly after our reservation time, we received a text that our table was ready. I requested a chef consultation, and within about 5 minutes, the chef came out, walked us through the buffet, pointed out what was safe, and explained which dishes could be modified to be gluten-free.
Gluten-Free Kitchen Modifications We Received:
- Two salads made without gluten-containing ingredients (e.g., no breadcrumbs)
- Meat dishes served without fried onion garnish
- Gluten-free pizzas with four different topping options
- Gluten-free bread
- A gluten-free tart for dessert
Naturally Gluten-Free Items on the Buffet:
- Fresh fruit
- Cheeses
- Shrimp cocktail (without cocktail sauce)
- Charcuterie meats
- Salads
- Cooked vegetables
- Mashed potatoes
- Carved meats
- Baby back ribs

Food & Service
The food was outstanding. After two hours, we were beyond full and completely satisfied with the gluten-free offerings. What truly stood out was how proactive the chef was—he offered to modify items in the kitchen before I even asked. One salad in particular had hidden breadcrumbs that weren’t visible in the buffet, and he made sure to warn me. I really appreciated his thoroughness and the time he took with us. I never felt rushed, and all of my questions were answered with care.
Character Interactions
Throughout dinner, characters came by regularly for photos and fun. Some visits were brief, while others were more interactive—so keep your camera ready! Character dining can be tricky since you’re juggling food and trying not to miss a visit, but staying longer increases your chances of seeing everyone at least once (and often more than once), especially if it’s not too busy.
Why a 4:00 PM Reservation Worked Well
Booking the earliest time slot really paid off:
- The staff was upbeat and full of energy—possibly because it was the start of their shift
- The buffet was freshly stocked and stations were spotless
- The chef wasn’t overwhelmed and could take his time with us
- The characters seemed especially enthusiastic to greet guests
Final Thoughts
I highly recommend Donald’s Tales of Adventure Character Dinner, especially if you’re gluten-free. The care taken with food preparation and the magical character moments made this one of the most enjoyable dining experiences I’ve had at Disneyland. My only complaint? I wish this wasn’t a limited-time offering—I’d absolutely go again on future visits.
