Are Dining Reservations needed at Disneyland?

Do I need to make dining reservations for my Disneyland vacation?  This is a common question I get asked, especially in the gluten free and food allergy community.  The short answer is no you don’t need reservations to eat, but in some cases you do.

Before ordering any gluten free food please ask for a Chef consult at Disneyland.  Disneyland menu options, ingredients, and locations are subject to change.  Please do your own research to see if this could be an option for your dietary needs by verifying with chef before consuming.

Disneyland offers a variety of places they call “quick service”.  At Quick service restaurants there is often a buffet cafeteria style where food is cooked constantly and you grab what you want then go pay.  Another quick service option is that you order your food and then wait in another area for the food to be picked up.  At both of these options it is very easy to get food if you have a food allergy.  When you arrive all you need to do is request to consult with a Chef and they will take care of you.

Another option to the Quick Service dining at Disneyland is Mobile Ordering.  In the Disneyland app you can see which locations offer mobile ordering. For more information you can read the article I wrote on Mobile Ordering at Disneyland.

There is a flip side to Disneyland dining in which you will need to make reservations up to 60 days before your trip.  This includes Character dining at the Disney hotels and some of the fancier sit down and be served restaurants like Carthay Circle, Blue Bayou, Napa Rose and Lamplight Lounge.  Depending on the size of your party it is possible to get a last minute table on the stand by list, but that isn't always an option.  On my last visit, since I was by myself, I was able to get a spot at the bar at Lamplight Lounge downstairs and have full access to the menu.

In my personal opinion, Quick Service Restaurants are the way to go when dining at Disneyland.  In all the years I've been visiting Disneyland I hardly ever made dining reservations (except on a special occasion when I wanted a character meal).  If you are dining with Food allergies be sure to check out this article Visiting Disneyland with Food Allergies.

For more info you can find some of these Menus in the Disneyland App or the Disney Parks Website.
